Updated: Jul 11

Socks for me are very personal, and I am sure they are to you as well; they are the fabric that is between your foot and the shoe and at the Running Store, we care that you have good quality socks on your feet.

Some socks in life have a meaning. When I look in my sock drawer there are these Red Socks that I picked up in 2001 in Auckland New Zealand, they hold special memory for a special person, Sir Peter Blake, a sailor, nothing to do with running, but they were call Sir Peter Blakes Lucky Socks and won America Cup races. Hopefully you have some lucky race socks.,

"Sir Peter Blake's red socks became a lucky charm and a symbol of New Zealand's success in the 1995 America's Cup. His wife, Pippa, gave him a pair of red Ralph Lauren socks for Christmas in 1994, and after the team's victory with him wearing them, they became a team superstition. The socks became so popular that a fundraising campaign was launched, and many New Zealanders wore red socks in support. "

When it comes to running, whether you are lacing up for a casual jog or preparing for an ultra-marathon, having the right gear is crucial. Among the most often overlooked but essential items are running socks. Proper running socks like Feetures, Injinji toesocks and Thermatech socks can dramatically enhance your comfort and performance. In this blog post, we will dive deep into the features and benefits of these brands, focusing on their comfort, blister prevention, moisture-wicking properties, and their unique designs for various running needs.

Another pair of socks that I am told I should throw in the bin, but they hold a special memory for me.

In 2011, I completed a multi-stage race in the Sahara Desert 250K over 7 days. (This was before The Running Store) Ron Hill Socks were my pick, and I only carried 2 pairs over the 7 days as I had to carry all my food for the duration, clothing, electrolytes, plus any other junk I wanted to take with me. These Ron Hills served me well on the race in 50 °C heat in the sand and trust me there was a ton of sand.

The Importance of Comfortable Running Socks

Finding the right pair of socks may seem trivial, but it can make all the difference in your running experience. Ill-fitting socks can cause friction, leading to blisters and discomfort. Feetures, Injinji and Thermatech have crafted their socks to address these issues directly.

Feetures socks are designed with a snug fit that hugs your foot, reducing the chance of blisters. They often feature targeted compression and support that helps with circulation during long runs. This support ensures that fatigue sets in slower, allowing you to keep going stronger for longer periods.

On the other hand, Injinji toesocks take a unique approach by separating each toe, providing a level of comfort and freedom not typically found in traditional socks. This toe-sock design allows your feet to splay naturally, reducing the risk of blisters caused by overlapping toes, especially during long distances.

Blister Prevention: A Runner's Best Friend

Blisters are an unwelcome companion on any run. They can turn a pleasant jog into a painful experience, especially when you're pushing your limits. Feetures and Injinji address blister prevention uniquely and effectively.

Feetures utilize a high-density cushioning system that helps reduce the impact on your feet, creating a soft yet supportive environment. This cushioning, combined with their seamless toe design, eliminates friction at the critical points, significantly reducing blister formation.

Similarly, Injinji toesocks offer a revolutionary approach by allowing each toe to move independently. This design minimizes skin-on-skin friction that often causes blisters. Runners who switch to Injinji often report fewer problems with blisters, even on their longest runs.

Moisture-Wicking Properties for All Conditions

Running in wet or sweaty socks can lead to discomfort and chafing, making moisture-wicking properties crucial. Both Feetures and Injinji have incorporated advanced moisture-wicking technologies to keep your feet dry and comfortable, regardless of weather conditions.

Feetures use a high-performance fabric blend that pulls moisture away from the skin. This helps in maintaining a dry environment inside the shoe, enhancing your overall comfort during those long runs. Moreover, their ventilated design increases airflow, allowing sweat to evaporate quickly.

Injinji toesocks also emphasize moisture control, utilizing a breathable fabric that ensures your toes stay dry. Their unique mesh top adds another layer of breathability, keeping your feet comfortable even on the hottest days.

Feetures offers different levels of compression and cushioning, allowing runners to choose based on their personal comfort preferences. The various lengths, from no-show to knee-high, mean there is a perfect sock for every runner and every type of shoe.

Feetures offers a variety of colors and patterns, so you can select socks that match your running attire. Their stylish designs don't just serve a purpose but make a statement on the track or trail.

What to Look for When Choosing Running Socks

When purchasing running socks, you should consider several factors to ensure you choose the right pair for your individual needs. Here are some essential considerations:

  • Fit: Make sure the socks provide a snug fit without being too tight. Socks that are too loose can cause bunching, leading to friction and blisters.

  • Material: Look for moisture-wicking materials that keep your feet dry. Synthetic blends often offer the best performance.

  • Cushioning and Support: Depending on your running style and distance, you may prefer more cushioning. Runners who are hard on their feet may benefit from extra padding.

  • Toe Design: Decide between traditional and toe-sock designs based on your comfort level. If you have issues with blisters between your toes, Injinji’s design might be the best fit.

By taking these factors into account, you can make a more informed decision and enjoy your runs even more.
